How to Write a Medical Assistant Resume:

1. Add your current contact information.

Write your personal details at the top of your resume. Include your name, current contact number, professional email, and LinkedIn profile. If you're currently employed and feel including your job title may improve your chances of getting an interview, do so. When applying for out-of-state jobs, omit your address unless you're asked for it.

2. Write a summary.

Use your summary to add a personal touch to your resume. In 2–3 sentences, tell the recruiter what makes you unique as a medical assistant. If you come across as compassionate, dedicated, and level-headed in your summary, chances are the recruiter will want to learn more about you. Any additional languages you speak could earn you extra points.

3. Add your skill set.

You'll use numerous skills in your daily duties as a medical assistant – only list the most important ones on your resume. Top skills recruiters look for include clerical, technical, and communication skills. If you can perform an EKG exam or operate an X-ray unit, state this. The ability to type 100 WPM is also something to mention. Include 5–10 key skills.

4. List any licenses or certifications.

Two of the most important credentials medical assistants can hold are the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA or AAMA) and the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA). Certifications for Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), Phlebotomy Technician (CPT), and EKG Technician (CET), also make great additions.

5. Add your qualifications or educational background.

Before sitting for your certification exam, you'll need to have completed a medical assistant preparation program by obtaining a certificate or associate degree from either the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). Include these credentials here.

6. Discuss your experience in a medical or administrative setting.

Aside from practical experience gained during your studies, medical assistant job applicants aren't really expected to have experience. Listing jobs that highlight your attention to detail and compassionate nature may grab the recruiter's eye. If you've volunteered at the Red Cross, or worked part-time as a receptionist or sales assistant, include this information.
