Review:

Idealist is a U.S.-based job portal that features social-impact employment opportunities from all over the world. The site offers a great way for Canadian employers to reach an international audience of qualified professionals with experience in the nonprofit sector.

Pros:

  • The site provides access to 100,000 nonprofit job seekers, interns, and volunteers every day.
  • All listings by non-U.S. organizations and global volunteer opportunities are free.
  • Advanced filter options enable targeted searches.
  • Idealist has a free mobile app.
  • Features include customized email alerts.
  • Job seekers have access to a graduate school directory and nonprofit career guidance.
  • The platform offers free applicant tracking tools.

Cons:

  • Pricing is listed in U.S. dollars only.
  • The website is not available in French.
  • There is no country-specific page for Canada.
  • Although Idealist credits never expire, paid listings to appear for 30 days with no pro-rata discounts, while other listings, like Google for Jobs, are free.
  • Local sites like WorkInNonProfits.ca and ECO Canada Job Board offer better traction in Canada.

Reputation:

The number of online user reviews is limited, but we found a few reviews on Trustpilot with an average rating of 3.2 out of 5 stars. While one user praised the volunteer work posted on the site, two customers who used the job posting features highlighted the costs, poor customer support, and the efficiency of the site's reach.

Idealist vs. Google for Jobs:

Idealist and Google for Jobs differ vastly since Google for Jobs is not a job board or a website. Job listings show up in organic Google search results, which could bring more visibility to job posts. Employers can post jobs for free once they have configured their job pages for optimal integration.
